Having in mind both the environment and the students of its communities, Thunderbird Resorts together with the Department of Education Center for Student and Co-Curricular Affairs is holding the first “Thunderbird Resorts Efforts on Environmental Sustainability (TREES) Writing Contest”.
Focusing on the theme “My Community and the Environment”, high school students can further the awareness campaign for their community’s environmental projects.
Participating schools in Rizal and La Union will have their third year and fourth year students submit as a requirement for their English class an original and unpublished essay on their community’s environmental programs and projects; on what can still be done; and on how they plan to help.
Among the submissions, only one entry will be chosen to represent the school. Then a total of 25 finalists per province will be selected to participate in an on-the-spot writing contest to be held at Thunderbird Resorts in Binangonan, Rizal and in Poro Point, La Union.
There will be one winner per province to receive P100,000 prize money and P50,000 donation for their schools. Aside from the cash prizes, the winning essay pieces will be published in national broadsheets.
On the other hand, finalists will get a P5,000 consolation prize and P10,000 school donation.
Thunderbird Resorts, a global property developer of themed leisure & amusement destinations with resorts in Peru, India, and Costa Rica, is an advocate of the use of sustainable resources. “We have always supported environmental projects,” says Thunderbird Resorts Vice President
Deadline of submission for school entries is on February 18, 2011; while the on-the-spot writing contest will be held on March 26, 2011 during the celebration of Earth Hour.

For Marian devotees, the Shrine of Our Lady of Namacpacan in the centuries-old church of St. Catherine in Luna is a site to behold. History gives importance to Our Lady because indigenous people claimed that she appeared as an old woman and offered them food and invited them to be baptized. Her image, which came from Spain through the galleons, reportedly performed miracles ever since she landed on the shores of Luna
